Three Beautiful Things 08/12/07: Old Timers, History Lesson, Ray Chapman

1. Mom and I went to the 76th annual meeting of the Shoshone County Pioneers and Oldtimers Association. I loved it. I saw some people I hadn't seen in a long time and had some wonderful conversations.

2. Joanna Ross gave a wonderful talk about how her family settled in the Silver Valley in the 1890's and painted a vivid picture of what they endured, especially during the Labor Wars. Her grandfather, who was no where even close to the dynamiting of the Bunker Hill concentrate mill was nonetheless rounded up, put in the bullpen for six months, and then imprisoned in San Quentin. Luckily, upon appeal, the charges were dropped and he was released. He was an Italian immigrant and the government found these immigrants easy to prosecute and by so doing, saved some face by demonstrating someone was punished for the violence.

3. I always enjoy talking with Ray Chapman. I admire his devotion to the history of the Bunker Hill Company. He was the company's public relations man for many years and he remains very faithful to the what the company once was. I don't share his devotion, but he has turned his devotion to the Bunker Hill into a devotion for the town of Kellogg and the Silver Valley that few can match. He's written a couple of monographs about the Silver Valley and Bunker Hill. I find him a very generous man, full of good will, and he always goes out of his way to strike up conversation with people he knew in the past, like me, who come to town to visit. He was also very attentive to our family while my dad was so ill and when he died.

We went to Mohegan Sun. Beautiful casino. I didn't win a damn thing, but got a wonderful lobster dinner. Funny you mentioned Lobstermania. That was the only machine I was doing good on and then we broke for lunch and went to a different part of the casino that didn't have that machine.

As for LCR, the dice game, you can find it online at www.dicegames.com. It comes with red chips to play with, but we used $2 scratch tickets - three of 'em for each player. And the winner takes all. Fun game.

Sorry for the long message -- i lost your email address. Happy Monday!

I didn't know Shoshone County had a Pioneers and Oldtimers Association. How cool is that? My dad was a latecomer - 1948. Ha ha. Mom came after they married in '52. Guess Dad could be an Oldtimer now - cause he's been there almost 60 years!

The Hunk knows Ray Chapman, but I'm not sure if I have met him. Great that he's documenting history for posterity. People of the Valley need to know those who have gone before.
