Three Beautiful Things 07/04/10: More Ordinary Tears, Church Hot Dogs, T-Bone Perfection

1. Something about this long season of Pentecost is moving me to tears during worship at St. Mary's. It's the Pentecost season, the season of The Ordinary. No big events. Jesus doesn't get crucified. The resurrection is over. No ascension into heaven. No birth of Jesus. We are living in the aftermath of the Holy Spirit's visitation at Antioch. It's a long season of ordinariness in the church. And, inexplicably, it's getting to me. I just sat there quietly weeping during worship -- quietly weeping during this long, uneventful, quiet time in the rhythm of the Anglican year. It's as if I were watching the Red Sox play the Rangers on a Wednesday evening in May at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington in a slow game and in the fourth inning of a game where nothing was happening, with one out, Josh Hamilton hit a routine chopper to Dustin Pedroia who fielded it cleanly and threw out Hamilton by fifteen feet, and I was moved to tears by such a routine baseball moment. I'll quote SK: Go Figure.

2. After worship concluded, Bishop Thornton invited us up to the Parish Hall for a July Fourth lunch of hot dogs, cole slaw, four bean casserole, watermelon, cold drinks, and dessert. I got to chat with Beth Booth, Harry Hance, and Les Breidenthal, making this July Fourth lunch a deep pleasure.

3. Speaking of deep pleasures, Anne and Russell and Allie invited me over for dinner. On the third, while out shooting photos, Russell and I went to the Market of Choice meat counter and I bought a perfect T-bone steak and this evening Russell charcoal grilled it up just right and along with sweet corn on the cob, a fresh salad, Hawaiian sweet bread, some Broken Halo IPA, and relaxing, generous hosts, I enjoyed the Fourth of July, as we used to say, to the max.

Three Beautiful Things 05/17/09: Dreamin' Kellogg Again, Logs and Specks and Eyes, Billy's One Man Geek Squad

1. My blog post, here, narrating my dream of sliding backwards in my Honda down Kellogg's icy Main Street into a funeral attended by mountain men with high powered rifles has attracted some interest, but, better yet, has attracted some interpretations of what this dream might mean. If you are into interpreting dreams, come read this one and feel free to take a crack at telling me what you think is going on the dank cavern of my id.

2. Bishop Thornton is capable of astonishing insights when he preaches; sometimes, he just hits hard on what we already know to be true and as he examined the destructive nature of evil speech and meanness and being judgmental, he hammered away eloquently at what we knew, but can't hear spoken enough.

3. I loaded Norton 360 on Deke's computer today, an easy enough task, but I really enjoy being of help, in any way I can, with others' computers. Yes, there's not a ton I can do, so when I can do something, it's a thrill.

Three Beautiful Things 02/22/09: Body of Christ, Wings, Mama Mia! Snubbed

1. Bishop Thornton got me thinking yet again about the body of Christ. I'm glad I don't have to be the brain or the mouth of the body of Christ, but I don't think I'm much of a foot either. Maybe I'm a bladder.

2. I enjoyed the many, many suggestions for where to eat Buffalo Wings sent to me on Facebook. I might also have some company for future meals. That'll be fun!

3. I enjoyed taking on a new cause on Facebook this evening: "Mama Mia!" got snubbed by the Academy! No awards? No nominations? WTHell?

Three Beautiful Things 01/28/07: Mansions, Coffee, Motorcycles

1. The Rev. John Bishop, the retired Bishop of Idaho, preached a beautiful sermon on the absurdity of grace and the infinitely huge mansions that comprise the house of God, where by merely knocking, all are welcome. The whole idea of closing the house is not Jesus' conception of his Father's house. It's the nonsense of us, the followers of Jesus.

2. Molly was working at Starbucks when I was done at church. I did not know this. She treated me to a free coffee and scone.

3. Motorcycle students buzzed around in a circle in the Lane Community College northeast parking lot behind the theater and I remembered that I plan to join this class this spring with the hope that when I visit North Idaho, I can join my friends on a leisurely ride up the North Fork of the Cd'A River and on to the top of Thompson Pass operating a motorcycle instead of riding on the back of Ed's or Scott's.
