He-Man Punctuation


Hello--

I found this in the Boston Globe online:

Ben McIntire, writing in the Times of London, asserts: "Real men, goes the unwritten rule of American punctuation, don't use semi-colons." Read more, here.

That's crazy; I love the semi-colon.

Ain't I a real man?

Oh, me too, me too! I adore the semicolon! Mr. McIntire must be deluded to eschew such a roundly useful punctuation mark in that offhanded manner. "Real men"! Ha! I scoff! *scoffs*

What is more manly than the robust union of ideas without any of that prissy futzing around with conjunctions? A semicolon cuts to the chase; it gets the job done; it makes the author's intent perfectly clear. Real men, it seems to me, would embrace such a straightforward tool of communication, keeping it in their workshops next to their hammers and screwdrivers.
